The Syrian Social National Party (SSNP) was
established under clandestine circumstances by Antoine Saadeh in the early
1930s. Its primary objective was to unify the people of greater Syria. The party

In 1976, under the leadership of Bashir Gemayel,
several Christian militias united under the banner of The Lebanese Forces. Their
goal was to combat the Syrian presence in Lebanon and to counter-balance the
perceived threat of armed Palestinian forces within the borders. Gemayel
maintained close ties with Israel.

Hezbollah (or The Party of God) emerged in 1982 as a
guerilla resistance army fighting against the Israeli occupation of southern
Lebanon. Though primarily Shiite, the party has drawn support from a broad range

disenfranchised Shiite youth in Lebanon.
